Strategic Planning Built for Nonprofit Organizations
Research-based, participatory strategic planning for nonprofits. Beacon guides your strategic planning team from community data to a board-adopted plan with committees, deadlines, and accountability built in.
Strategic Plans That Get Implemented, Not Shelved
Beacon understands that nonprofit strategic planning is a different animal than for-profit. We have worked exclusively with nonprofits and government organizations since our inception in 2014. We guide your organization from listening to launch: research, a facilitated Strategic Focus Retreat, and a living plan with the committees, timelines, and accountability to make it real.
Break the Cycle of Planning Without Action
Too many strategic plans are written, approved, and filed away until the next strategic plan is required. The board changes, priorities drift, and three years later you start over.
Our process is built differently. Every goal in a Beacon plan has a deadline, an owner, and a place on the board agenda. Your plan becomes a working tool your board and staff use at every meeting, and it doesn’t end up collecting dust.
Research-Based. Participatory. Built Around You.
Grounded in data. We start with what your community and your people are actually saying: stakeholder surveys, partner input, community needs assessments, census data, and the policy and funding trends you’ll face over the life of the plan.
Shaped by many voices. Board, staff, beneficiaries, donors, and community leaders all have the opportunity to have an impact on the plan. A strategic direction people help build is a plan they’ll carry out.
Tailored, never templated. Whether you’re starting fresh, refreshing an existing plan, or reviving one that stalled, we meet you where you are and build on what you already do well.
Centered through an equity lens. Every step is designed so that every voice, perspective, and culture is valued, and so your resources reach the people and places that need them most.
From First Conversation to Board-Adopted Plan
Listen & Learn. We begin with a consultation with your leadership, then gather input. Participants complete a pre-retreat survey on strengths, challenges, and priorities. We collect partner and grantee feedback and research your community: demographics, social needs, the local economy, the policy environment, and industry trends.
Strategic Focus Retreat. A facilitated, two-day working retreat where the research becomes direction.
Day 1 — Understand. Assess. Envision. Board, staff, and community stakeholders review your history, the community data, and what partners need. The can can include a community stakeholder panel so you hear directly how your organization is seen from the outside.
Day 2 — Focus. Align. Act. Your internal team reviews the combined survey results and SWOT, chooses its strategic initiatives, sets measurable goals, and forms the committees that will own them. The first draft of your plan will be delivered within a week of the retreat.
Planning Phase. Over the following weeks, your committees refine the draft using structured work-session guides. They confirm targets, assign tasks, and settle open questions. The revised plan then goes to your full board for a vote.
Implementation & Accountability. Your plan launches with a quarterly reporting rhythm, a progress scorecard, and committee chairs who report at every board meeting. Status definitions and escalation steps catch slipping goals early.

FAQs
How long does the process take?
It depends on your board calendar. Most engagements move from first conversation to board adoption over a few months, or even a few weeks, and the retreat itself is two days. We will need at least a month in advance of the retreat to build the most productive program for you.
Who should attend the retreat?
Board members, executive leadership, and key staff. Your selected beneficiaries, donors, and community leaders are invited for the community-facing portion of Day 1.
We already have a plan. Can you help us refresh it?
Yes. We build on what’s working, assess what fell short in your last plan, and sharpen it into a focused, actionable strategy.
Do you stay involved after the plan is adopted?
We can. Implementation support, check-ins, and coaching for committee chairs and executive leadership are available.
